Rosatom and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation have agreed to create a production of calcium metal for the needs of domestic metallurgy
Rusatom Metalltech LLC (part of the Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL) and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation have signed an agreement on strategic partnership and cooperation within the framework of a project to create a calcium metal production with the support of Russian market participants represented by the largest metallurgical enterprises of the country.
The document was signed by Vladislav Demidov, Acting Director of the Department of Metallurgy and Materials of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, and Andrey Andrianov, General Director of Rusatom Metalltech LLC, during the XII Atomexpo-2022 International Forum in Sochi.
Market participants and the largest consumers of metallic calcium are the leading metallurgical companies of the country PJSC Severstal, PJSC MMK, LLC EVRAZ, PJSC TMK, JSC OMK, LLC UK Mechel-Steel, LLC Novostal-M, LLC UK Metalloinvest, LLC UK Ural Steel, LLC CC "PMH", JSC "Uralredmet", JSC "MZ "Elektrostal", JSC "Ruspolimet". Thus, the national enterprises of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy supported the initiative of Rusatom Metalltech LLC to create a new production of calcium metal in Russia, also confirmed the industry's need for the implementation of this project and their interest.
The aim of the project is to create in Russia a modern high-tech production of calcium metal and products based on it on the basis of electrolysis technology using electricity from one of the Russian nuclear power plants.
"In the long term, the new calcium production will allow the ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy of Russia to ensure the strategic safety of continuous-cycle metallurgical plants in providing calcium products necessary for technological production processes, as well as to solve the tasks set within the framework of the Strategy for the Development of nonferrous metallurgy of Russia until 2030. The project will be implemented with the participation of industry enterprises and research institutes of Rosatom. The planned design capacity of the future production will be more than 7000 tons of metallic calcium per year," said Andrey Andrianov, General Director of Rusatom Metalltech LLC.
