NLMK Lipetsk launches another new unit for improved dedusting performance

NLMK Lipetsk has commenced hot testing of new environmental protection equipment at its steelmaking operations. The new unit for gas dedusting with a capacity of 600,000 m3 per hour, will enable a five-fold reduction in dust emissions at the Mixer Section of BOF Shop No. 1.

The Mixer Section processes hot metal supplied by the plant’s blast furnaces. Before feeding it into steel smelting, this section homogenizes the hot metal by temperature and chemical composition. As hot metal is being poured in and out, it generates dust emissions that need to be captured by the deducting system.

The new set of equipment includes a dedusting unit fitted with advanced bag filters, exhaust fans, and dedicated collection hoods mounted over pouring sites. The new system improves dedusting performance up to 5 mg of dust per m3, on par with BATs.

This project marks another stage in the implementation of the four-way agreement between NLMK, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, the Federal Supervisory Natural Resources Management Service and the Lipetsk Region on cooperation in sustainable development through to 2024. NLMK Lipetsk has already implemented six out of the nine envisaged projects.

Environmental project investment has exceeded RUB 650 m.
